Souter Lighthouse
Souter LighthouseThe lighthouse started operating in 1871 and was, at the time, the most advanced in the world.

You can explore the lighthouse, starting in the Engine Room. Learn about how lighthouses work through video, displays and a variety of navigational equipment.

 

See the family living quarters in the Victorian Keepers Cottage and climb the 76 steps to the top of the tower to enjoy wide views of the coastline, from the mouth of the Tyne to the Tees. Or you can enjoy the same view without leaving the ground floor by operating the remote controlled CCTV.

Engine RoomYou can experience the fantastic views of Beaches and Coastline including, The Leas a 2 ½ miles stretch of beach, cliff and grassland with spectacular views and bird sanctuary. Watch the seabirds on the cliffs and around the great sea-stack of the infamous Marsden Rock.

The price in brackets is the standard admission price, without Gift Aid.
There is free admission to National Trust Members, and free entry to all visitors to the shop and tea room.


Location/Directions:
On the A183 Coast Road at Whitburn, 2 miles south of South Shields, 3 miles north of Sunderland. Buses stop by main gate.

Facilities:
Disabled Access: Wheelchair access to ground floor, braille guide and tactile exhibits, accessible toilet, CCTV enables those unable to climb the tower to see the view from the top.

Other Facilities: Car and coach parking, tea-room with indoor & outdoor facilities, National Trust shop, Education Officer, dogs on leads are welcome.
