South Shields Museum & Art Gallery

South Shields Museum and Art Gallery is one of the most successful local museums in the country and is situated in the heart of South Shields. The museum's major collections celebrate the strong natural and social history of the area.

South Shields Museum

The Tales of South Tyneside gallery tells the story of the people and history of South Tyneside. Find out more about the life of Britain's best selling author Catherine Cookson, who was born in South Tyneside and used the area as an inspiration for her many novels.

Be brave and venture into the museum's Creature Corner, where you can see reptiles, snakes and all kinds of creepy crawlies, and don't miss Art Adventure, an art gallery with a difference.

The newest gallery at this popular museum is Changing Faces, which charts the history of South Tyneside from the Bronze age to the twentieth century with some impressive interactive displays.

South Shields Museum and Art Gallery is suitable for all ages and tastes, with many hands on displays and visiting collections to keep you returning. There is also a fantastic shop, selling an extensive range of South Shields memorabilia, and is the home of South Shields Tourist Information Centre.
