Situated in South Shields Market Square, The Old
Town Hall is a scheduled monument and grade 1 listed
building, built in 1786 by the Dean and Chapter of Durham.
South Shields Town Hall
Opened
in 1910, this is a stunning testament to quality craftsmanship,
housing a grand staircase, Italian marble, stained glass
and elaborate ceilings. Outside the building at the
front entrance stands a grand fountain, which at night
glistens with colour through the reflections of light
from the Town Hall.
The Customs House
Built
in the 1860's and beautifully renovated a few years
ago, has a growing reputation as the focus of artistic
and cultural life on South Tyneside. With a changing
gallery exhibition programme showing work from international

a range of productions, the Customs
House caters to suit all tastes.
