| The
stunning museum building houses 'The Age of Bede' an exciting
major exhibition, which takes visitors through the makings
of Bede's Northumbria. The experimental anglo-saxon farm
called Gyrwe after the English name for Jarrow, includes
a full size early Northumbrian timber hall, a Grubenhaus
(sunken featured building) and a monastic workshop, all
built using only traditional tools and techniques. You
can see rare breeds of cattle, wild boar, sheep and geese
whilst historic re-enactments show
how medieval villagers lived and dressed. Experience the
unique atmosphere of St. Paul's Church and Monastic Site
and the ruins of the later medieval monastery to experience
the unique atmosphere of 1300 years ago. Finally relax
in the restaurant at Jarrow Hall, one of the finest Georgian
houses in the region.
The twin monasteries of St Paul's, in Jarrow, and St Peter's, in Wearmouth, are bidding to become a World Heritage Site - an accolade shared by the Taj Mahal, the Pyramids and the Great Wall of China, along with places in Britain already on the UNESCO list such as Hadrian's Wall and Durham Castle & Cathedral. To find out more about the bid, which will highlight Wearmouth-Jarrow's outstanding influence on learning, the European identity and as the home of the Venerable Bede, see www.wearmouth-jarrow.org.uk
