Arbeia Roman Fort and Museum
Built in the AD 160s, this Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site stood guard at the mouth of the River Tyne and controlled the main port of entry to the Roman Empire in Britain. Originally built to house a garrison, Arbeia soon became the military supply base for the 17 forts along the length of Hadrian's Wall.
Today, Arbeia combines the excavated remains of the original base with reconstructions of buildings to present a fascinating insight into what life was like in Roman Britain. It is an important archaeological site and is one of the few places in Britain where visitors can see brought-to-life Roman buildings.
Visitors can explore the Commanding Officer's House, Barrack Block and Centurion's House and discover the reconstructed West Gate. The museum displays finds that have been excavated at Arbeia, including weapons, armour, jewellery and coins, which are amongst the most impressive found along the World Heritage Site.
Find out what it is like to be an archaeologist at Time Quest where you can dig for finds on the excavation site and then discover what you have unearthed. Unmissable!
