The Customs House
Arts in Education Programme

The Customs House under the umbrella of the Arts in Education Agency CUTOMBUILT, provides a focus for creative arts development for young people in the Borough both within the statutory education system and the more informal setting of the Customs House, through a number of projects.

Creation Myths - This project involves dance, drama, and storytelling with six primary schools.

Creative Writing - The Education Action Zone works with six schools to develop the theme of magic and mythology, using a cinema trip as a source of inspiration.

Street Dance - Breakdance and acrobatics coach Rico Jakk, works with schools in South Tyneside to share his 'urban art' skills.

Yemeni Project - Writer Peter Mortimer has been commissioned to write a new play about the Yemeni race riots centred around The Customs House in 1917 and 1935. Peter spent several months working with the community on a play about the Meadowell riots of the 1980s, so he is the perfect person to write such a piece. There is still a thriving Yemeni community in South Shields, and the themes raised, will be investigated by the Borough's comprehensive schools, as well as inspiring a creative writing project.
