It's won a number of awards, which it holds on to consistently every year, for the quality of its sands and water quality. It has been awarded the European Blue Flag Award and the Quality Coast Award. The South Shields beaches have also received an excellent score in 2016 for the bathing water quality by the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
Sandhaven Beach offers the traditional seaside experience of making sandcastles, dipping toes in the sea, writing names in the sand, exploring rock pools or simply playing family and childhood seaside games all day including digging a big hole!
The beach and surrounding area is often home to many events, such as sandcastle competitions, kids entertainment and lots more. It's a great spot to enjoy a game of volleyball (volleyball nets are in place during the summer), frisbee, football and other beach games.
