Bede's World

1300 years ago the Venerable Bede lived and worked at the Wearmouth-Jarrow monastery of St Paul's, Jarrow and St Peter's, Wearmouth. Currently bidding to be granted the coveted World Heritage Site status, Bede's World acts as a gateway to this site.

During a visit to this popular attraction you will find out what life was like for Bede and his fellow monks, and discover how much of Bede's work is of continuing importance today.

You can see enthralling finds that have been discovered on the site, and explore the reconstructed Anglo-Saxon farm, with its timber buildings and rare breeds of animals.

Next door take in the atmosphere of St Paul's Church, where amazingly the chancel is still standing from Bede's time, and view the ruins of the later Medieval Monastery.

Bede's World also has a team of educational officers who provide a range of sessions for educational groups, or can tailor make a programme to suit your group's interests. Sessions that can be arranged include:

Boy at the Monastery

An opportunity to dress in habits and process into St Paul's Chancel, explore the monastic buildings and examine the displays in Bede's World.

Religious life at St Paul's

Pupils will dress in habits and experience life as a Monk through role play, song and exploring artifacts.

Anglo-Saxons

Visit the reconstructed Anglo-Saxon farm where you will learn more about the animals, buildings and skills of the people of the time. Pupils can also explore the rest of Bede's World.

The Scriptorium

Learn more about how manuscripts were made and have a go at making your own scribe.
