With incredible excavated remains, stunning reconstructions and amazing finds on display Arbeia Roman Fort is a winning combination for an educational trip.
Guarding the entrance to the River Tyne, Arbeia was once the military supply base and garrison for the 17 forts along Hadrian's Wall. As the most northerly point of the mighty Roman Empire this was an important place, and as such is now recognised as a coveted World Heritage Site.
As the most extensively excavated military supply base in the Roman Empire, Arbeia provides a great insight in to the life of the Roman Army. Following excavation work many of the remains of the site can be seen and some of the incredible items found, such as dress, jewellery and weapons, can be viewed in the museum.
The site has great reconstructions too. Visitors can discover just how hard life was like as a Roman Soldier in the Barrack Block, and see the much more comfortable surroundings that the Commander lived in. The Fort's West Gate has also been reconstructed giving a great bird's eye view over the remains of the site below.
The site's Time Quest attraction is perfect for educational visits. Here groups can participate in an artificial archaeological dig, handle and examine lots of different objects and materials, design a Roman mosaic and take part in many more hands on activities.
Don't miss out - be sure to join the armies of groups heading to Arbeia Roman Fort each year!
