Golf

South Tyneside is home to three golf courses which cater for golfers of all abilities.  Two of the courses, Whitburn and South Shields, offer stunning views over the coastline while Boldon boasts fantastic recreational facilities.

Cricket

Cricket has been played in South Shields since 1868 and the borough of South Tyneside now has nine cricket clubs, showing the sport has continued to grow in popularity with players and spectators. Visitors are welcome to watch matches at most clubs, simply contact individual clubs for details.

Tennis

Tennis is a well loved sport in South Tyneside and has brilliant indoor and outdoor facilities. During the summer months a number of the borough's parks open their outdoor courts for public use free of charge, including Redhead Park and West Park. South Shields and Carr Ellison Park, Hebburn and Cornthwaite Park, Whitburn.

Horse Riding

Why not explore the coast on horseback! North Lizard Riding school is stunningly located overlooking the sea and offers riding instruction, hacking out and pony care instruction days.

Bowling

South Shields Bowling Club has first class greens for both indoor and outdoor bowling. There are two picturesque outdoor greens with a total of twelve rinks with a further eight indoor rinks, boasting one of the best playing surfaces in the country. After your match, why not relax with a drink from the bar.

There are a number of other bowling greens located in parks around the borough, including Carr Ellison Park, Cornthwaite Park, Coulthard Park, Monkton Dene, North Marine Park, Readhead Park and West Parks in South Shields and Jarrow.

Great North Run

The Bupa Great North Run has long been established as the world's biggest half marathon. Now in its 31st year, over 50,000 runners are expected to compete in 2011. Elite athletes and fun runners alike will make their way over the iconic Tyne Bridge in Newcastle, to the beautiful seaside finish line in South Shields.  Thousands of spectators line the streets along the route to cheer runners on to the coastal finish.
