  • 6.3 million people visited South Tyneside in 2017. This was up 6% on 2016. *
  • Visitor expenditure (direct and indirect spend) in South Tyneside in 2017 was £306 million, up by 6% on 2016. *
  • The number of people directly employed in tourism in South Tyneside in 2017 stood at 2,954. When indirect employment in the supply chain is taken into account total employment stands at 3,780. *
  • Day visitors spend on average £28.96 per person. *
  • Satisfaction levels are high, especially in relation to satisfaction with the event programme and things to see and do. **
  • The South Tyneside Festival takes place throughout June, July and August making it one of the longest and largest festivals in the North East. It celebrates 30 years in its current format in 2018.
  • The South Tyneside Festival is particularly well known for it's Sunday Concerts in July and has attracted artists in recent years such as Billy Ocean, Sister Sledge and The Proclaimers to Bents Park, our events arena at the heart of South Shields Seafront.
  • The Festival's Summer Parade was re-launched a couple of years ago, and goes from strength to strength. More than 2000 people take part in it from around the North East, and it's the biggest carnival parade of its kind in the North East!
