Coastline

See & doIn South Shields, our award winning beaches stretch from the mouth of the River Tyne to the commanding cliffs at Trow point.

Littlehaven beach

Littlehaven is a beautiful, small beach sheltered by the South Pier at the mouth of the river. This peaceful beach is the ideal vantage point for watching the myriad of different ships and boats which travel in and out of the river on a daily basis. Due to the shelter offered by the pier, this beach is also perfect for many different water sports.

Sandhaven beach

On the other side of the South pier lies Sandhaven beach, which boasts long stretches of golden sand lined with impressive sand dunes. Hours of fun can be had building sandcastles, paddling in the sea, enjoying a picnic or just lying back and watching the world go by.

The Leas

Towering cliffs take over from the golden sands at Trow Point with stunning coastal paths twisting and turning all the way down to Souter Lighthouse and beyond. This two mile stretch of designated special scientific interest is known as The Leas and is managed by the National Trust. The paths offer panoramic views of the coastline, taking in the many beautiful bays and coves that have been carved out of the cliff face by stormy seas over the years.

Marsden Bay

The most dramatic location is Marsden Bay, home of the impressive Marsden Rock, which is renowned for its seabird colonies; Kittiwakes, cormorants, gulls and fulmars can regularly be seen here.
