Whether you're in South Tyneside for pleasure or business,
the Tourist Information Centre offers advice and information
to help you make the most of your visit. Our experienced
staff provide advice on accommodation, entertainment,
places to visit, shopping, eating out, leisure activities & local services.
You will find leaflets, books, maps and information
on regional attractions.
A What's
On Guide and local theatre programmes are available
from our Tourist Information Centre and you can even
book your tickets for The Customs House and
the Westovian
Theatre.
The Tourist Information Centre also operates a book
a bed ahead service for visitors wishing to stay in
accommodation with availability in the area.

Getting here
Road Directions
Enter South Shields on A194 from either A194M or A19. Continue on A194 until you reach the Town Hall, turn left at traffic lights then bear right down side of Town Hall. At mini roundabout turn left onto A183 (Anderson Street). There is a choice of car parks, take either 1st left after next mini roundabout for the Library car park or the second left and go up the ramp on the right to the Majestic Bingo car park, both are pay & display car parks within easy reach of the TIC within South Shields Museum & Art Gallery in the pedestrianised area.
Public Transport
Train/Metro: South Shields is accessible by train from Newcastle via the Metro system. When leaving the Metro station exit onto the main pedestrianised are (King Street) and turn right past Cafe Nero. The TIC is just a few minutes walk away in the Museum on the second block on the right, just after the Criterion public house.
Bus: Most buses stop in Kepple Street outside the Central Post Office. When leaving the bus, head left back towards the pedestrian crossing on the corner. Cross to the left onto the pedestrianised area and turn right at the Criterion public house on the corner. The TIC is situated in the Museum on your right hand side.

Arrival and car parking

The Tourist Information Centre is within South Shields Museum & Art Gallery which lies on the pedestrianised section of Ocean Road. There is free on street parking nearby. The nearest pay and display car park is off Anderson Street, on top of the Majestic Bingo Hall adjoining the Denmark Centre. A lift goes down from the car park to the ground floor of the Denmark Centre. There is level street access into Fowler Street, then turn right and right again into Ocean Road and towards the Museum. It is approximately 5 minutes walk from the car park.
The nearest drop-off point by taxi, dial a ride, car or coach is Mile End Road, then a five minute walk to the Museum.
By Train or Bus
The nearest Metro station is in King Street and the nearest bus station is in Keppel Street. Both are five minutes walk from the Museum.

Entrance
There is one level entrance to the Museum from the pedestrianised area on Ocean Road. One set of double automatic doors leads into foyer which has a blue tactile carpet and then another set lead into the Tourist Information Desk and shop area which has a tiled floor. There is a lowered part of the counter for easy access for wheelchair users.
There is a counter induction loop system at the shop.
Assistance dogs are welcome.
In an emergency the fire alarms have a bell and visual flashing lights. The lifts cannot be used in event of a fire but evac-chairs and safe fire refuge points are available, staff will be on hand to assist.
There is a selection of seating available throughout the building.
Within the Museum there are accessible toilets with baby changing facilities on the ground floor and the first floor. There are also male & female toilets on the first floor by the lift. To get to the ground floor from the Tourist Information Centre level there are 5 steps or the chair/pram lift. There is a staircase or a large passenger lift to access the first floor. The lift has a voice announcer and Braille and tactile indicators.
Hot & cold drinks, cakes and sandwiches are available in the cafe on the ground floor in the Changing Faces Gallery.
